about the endowment

The primary goals of this program are to have entrepreneurial students visit businesses to raise their awareness of what it takes to operate a business successfully, secondly to evaluate the experience from many perspectives including that of the CEO so that they are able to develop and enhance their own personal development, business concept and plan.

Scott Caplan, died tragically in a car crash in January of 2006 at the age of 19. Scott was a Howard County resident and a full time student at Howard Community College; his life-long dream was to be the owner of his own business.

Scott's dream was to be the owner of his own business so his family created this endowment to assist students who have the same entrepreneurial spirit that Scott often demonstrated. This endowment was made available to students who are building a business through the Center for Entrepreneurial and Business Excellence at Howard Community College or who have already started their own business. The goal of the Endowment is to help make dreams become a reality for deserving students under the guidance of HCC staff and area business leaders. Scott's passion for new business ventures is being carried on with his endowment.

The Endowment has a distinguished advisory board comprised of area business, non-profit leaders and HCC faculty and staff. The board has developed a number of innovative programs; a traditional scholarship as well as a paid work-study internship with top area companies and non-profits under the supervision of HCC faculty and staff.

The success of the program relies heavily on the active participation from our key corporate and non profit partners who have given their invaluable time to this endeavor.

There were two Caplan Scholars during summer 2009 and one individual for the 2010 school year. More information about Bailey Topper, Devin McArthur and Zuri Chavers can be found here, along with descriptions of their start-up companies.
