Scholarship Recipients

There were two Caplan Scholars during summer 2009 and one individual for the 2010 academic year. Below is an overview of their backgrounds, their new businesses and their experience with the endowment and its hands-on internship.

Courtney Watts worked with Super Book Deals, Princeton Sports and Columbia Association. She wrote a blog about her experiences and can be accessed on the home page. Sean Davidson returns to HCC after starting several innovative environmental companies to get his degree.

There were two Caplan Scholars during summer 2009, Bailey Topper and Devin McArthur and Zuri Chavers was our individual candidate for the 2010 academic year.

Their experience had three major components:

  • Visits with five CEOs inclusive of a 6-8 hour day spent with each CEO between May 27th and June 12th. The CEOs were Mary Ann Scully of Howard Bank, Jean Parker of Merriweather Post, Chip Doetsch of Apple Ford, Chris Myers of Super Book Deals and Brock Yetso of Ulman Cancer Fund.
  • Internships at Apple Ford, Merriweather Post and Ulman Cancer Fund that provided them with a variety of work experiences and supported completion of a plan for their business.
  • Throughout this process the students worked with Chris Sikora an HCC adjunct faculty member and business owner who served as their business coach. As coach Chris supported their efforts and helped to provide what ever additional resources were needed.

Devin McArthur

Devin's business idea grew out of a class he took here at HCC, Entrepreneurship and Creativity. Devin has a background in sales of financial products and he wanted to find a way to create an opportunity for himself based upon his educational and work experience. Devin has not yet launched his business but has moved on to Towson University to complete his bachelor's degree.

Devin's Revolutionary Financial Services: Revolutionary Financial Services is a firm that consults and sells financial products to under served markets such as Hispanic Americans.

Bailey Topper

Bailey is educated in design and has travelled extensively. Her overseas experience included working in retail and design. Bailey's consulting and services practice would leverage her global experiences and her education. Currently, Bailey is working in the fashion design industry awaiting the appropriate economic conditions to bring up her business.

Topper's Design and Consulting: Topper Design and Consulting is a multi-purpose creative firm. As a sole proprietor Bailey serves both the aspiring designer and the motivated small business. Two major client services provided are portfolio development and company revitalization.

Zuri was a Silas Craft Collegian at HCC and joined the Student Government on campus, participating in numerous leadership conventions and community service events.

Zuri's After-school Program: Zuri has performed live in concert, traveled abroad to China to study art/culture and is now working with the Center for Entrepreneurial and Business Excellence at HCC to cultivate an after-school program which gives middle and high school students who have expressed an interest in writing lyrics and poetry an opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills and study habits as well as become published, and recorded in a professional studio.
